Breastfeeding is a child’s right and every woman who has a child ought to breastfeed.

These were the remarks of H.E. Navi Kibwana, the Chair of The Council of the First Ladies Association while addressing mothers, health practitioners and stakeholders who had gathered at Bungoma County Referral Hospital’s paediatric section to observe World breast feeding Day.

The theme for this year’s event is “Empower Parents: Enable Breastfeeding”.

The World Breastfeeding week is a global annual event jointly organized and promoted worldwide by WABA (World Alliance for Breast feeding Action), WHO and UNICEF.

Addressing those present, H.E. Dorothy Nyong’o noted that the primary function of breasts in women was breast feeding and it was imperative that effort is put to encourage all mothers to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months.

She noted that breast feeding is a natural and important player in preventing breast cancer.

On her part, H.E. Caroline Wangamati noted with concern that poor health indicators among children in most sub-county hospitals in the county could be attributed to poor nutrition.

She urged men to support their women in the breast feeding journey and ensure the mental, emotional and physical well being is taken care of at all times.

“As a community, we need to ensure there is no stigma especially among the young mothers who may feel ashamed and conscious of their bodies being affected should they breastfeed,” she said.

Dr Akatu the medical director led the team from the department of health in celebrating the day.
